Methods Tutorials

We provide materials that may be useful for learning about and analyzing interpersonal interactions. Specifically, we present tutorials with illustrative examples of how a variety of useful analyses can be implemented in R.

Our current work has prioritized the interdependent, back-and-forth exchange of messages, and how operationalizations of dyadic dynamics are linked to the pragmatic outcomes of interpersonal communication. Thus, most of our tutorials focus on analysis of categorical time-series data. We recognize that many researchers work with continuous data to study interpersonal interaction. We are currently working up examples of applications with continuous data and will post those as they get completed.

Data Visualization

We find it very helpful to visualize interpersonal interaction data to “see” how interactions unfold. Data visualizations are particularly helpful for gaining an intuitive understanding of the interactions and formulating hypotheses about patterns and nonlinear trends (and differences in those patterns and trends across dyads).

Analytics Techniques

We demonstrate through illustrative examples how each analytic technique can be implemented in R. The toy data set and code (in an R-Markdown file) are available for download and adaptation to new data. Pointers to additional resources, including additional materials and recent papers applying the analytic technique are included with each tutorial.
